ABOUT STONE ELK LAND SERVICES

We know what it means to protect a place you love.

Stone Elk Land Services grew from the same questions many Colorado homeowners face: How do you lower wildfire exposure, care for your trees, and make confident decisions about your land? We bring a homeowner’s perspective and a practical, owner-led approach to every conversation.

THE STORY BEHIND STONE ELK

It started with 27 trees.
And a lot of questions.

Before there was Stone Elk Land Services, there was a Colorado homeowner trying to make sense of a changing wildfire and insurance landscape. After being asked to remove 27 trees near a residence, the questions started stacking up: Which trees mattered most? How should the work be prioritized? How would the improvements be documented?

Later, experiencing the 2024 Quarry Fire evacuation brought home just how personal wildfire preparedness can become. Those experiences helped shape a straightforward idea: property owners deserve a knowledgeable partner who understands the concern behind the call, not just the work listed on an estimate.

That is the thinking behind Stone Elk Land Services today—clear assessments, responsible forestry work, and practical documentation to help people care for the places they call home.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Good forestry starts with good judgment.

A healthier landscape is not necessarily a cleared landscape. We aim to make thoughtful choices that address the homeowner’s priorities while respecting the forest around them.

Clear answers

Understand the priorities, the scope, the access needs, and what will happen before equipment arrives.

Right-sized work

Choose treatments for the species, terrain, structures, and outcomes that matter on your particular property.

Long-term stewardship

Focus on the trees and vegetation that remain—and the next steps needed to maintain improvements.

OUR WORK

Practical forestry. Property-specific solutions.

From a single problem area to larger acreage, we help landowners prioritize work that supports wildfire risk reduction, forest health, and day-to-day land management.

Wildfire Mitigation & Defensible Space

Reduce hazardous vegetation near homes and create more thoughtful fuel separation while respecting the property’s natural character.

HOW WE WORK

A clear path from concern to action.

No two properties are identical. Our process is built to clarify the goals, define the scope, and help you understand what comes next.

01

Assess

Start with your concerns, property conditions, vegetation, slopes, structures, and equipment access.

02

Plan

Prioritize the work, discuss the proposed treatment, and provide a clear project estimate.

03

Mitigate

Complete the agreed-upon forestry, tree, brush, or fuel-reduction work with attention to the site.

04

Document

Review the completed scope and provide available records, imagery, or mapping if included.

Our goal is not to recommend the most work. It is to help define the right work for the property and the homeowner.

BEYOND THE FIELD WORK

The work matters. So does the record of it.

Homeowners may need to explain the condition of their forest, share proposed work with an insurer, or retain before-and-after records. Where appropriate, Stone Elk can support that need with straightforward documentation and optional mapping tools.

  • Property observations. Capture the vegetation and conditions that inform the recommended scope.
  • Visible project changes. Organize available before-and-after photos and work descriptions.
  • Additional perspective. Optional drone imagery and LiDAR-derived forest structure information can help document canopy, vegetation density, and terrain.

Documentation may support homeowner conversations with insurers or grant administrators, but it is not a certification. Coverage, funding, and underwriting decisions remain with those organizations. No particular outcome is guaranteed.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Getting to know Stone Elk.

Understand how we work, what we offer, and how to begin a conversation about your property.

What does Stone Elk Land Services do?

We help Colorado property owners with wildfire mitigation, defensible space, selective tree services, forestry mulching, brush removal, forest management, mountain pine beetle concerns, and optional property documentation. We recommend the scope that fits the land rather than treating every property the same.

Who will be involved in planning my project?

Stone Elk is locally owned and owner-led. We begin with your goals and site conditions, then outline the proposed scope, access needs, and appropriate next steps before scheduling work.

Do I need to remove every tree near my home?

Not necessarily. Effective mitigation often relies on strategic spacing, reducing ladder fuels, removing certain hazardous vegetation, and maintaining the treated area. The right approach depends on species, slopes, buildings, and site-specific priorities.

Can you help with insurance documentation or a grant application?

Where appropriate, we can provide project descriptions, maps, photographs, and itemized records that a homeowner can use when communicating with an insurer or reviewing funding opportunities. Requirements vary, and insurers and program administrators make their own decisions. We do not guarantee approval, a premium change, or any particular reimbursement.

What is LiDAR, and does every project need it?

LiDAR can help characterize terrain and three-dimensional vegetation structure, including canopy height and density. It is an optional documentation tool, not a requirement for every project and not an insurance certification.

What should I send for a property assessment?

Your property address or nearest town, approximate acreage or work area, photos if available, access concerns, and what prompted the inquiry—wildfire mitigation, insurance requirements, dead trees, beetle damage, or ongoing forest management. Start with our contact form.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR PROPERTY

A healthier, more manageable landscape starts with a conversation.

Whether your concern is wildfire exposure, a stand of declining trees, overgrown brush, or a requirement from an insurer, tell us a little about the property and what you want to accomplish. We can help identify an appropriate first step.

Helpful to include: property location, approximate work area, photos, access concerns, and your priorities.
