WHY ROXBOROUGH PARK PROPERTIES NEED A LOCAL PLAN

Red-rock slopes, oak brush and community access change the priorities.

Thoughtful mitigation manages wildfire fuels while preserving desirable trees, property character and established boundaries.

Properties around Roxborough Park Foundation, Ravenna, Arrowhead and the Waterton Canyon approach can differ significantly in vegetation, drainage, slope and site access. Some are within associations; others are outside them. An address alone does not settle which permissions apply.

The Roxborough Park Foundation 2020 Community Wildfire Protection Plan and West Metro’s planning materials document concerns such as continuous Gambel oak, ridges and limited access routes. Those are community-level observations—not a risk score or required tree-removal list for any single home.

ROXBOROUGH PARK PROPERTY PLANNING

Work limits, brush fuels and driveways shape the plan.

Cutting vegetation near a rock formation, open-space line or narrow road takes a different plan from treating a broad, level lot. We review access and authorization before deciding whether to thin, mulch, chip, haul or phase the work.

  • 01
Home and deck edges: Prioritize leaf litter, shrubs, stacked material, fence connections and other combustibles near buildings.
  • 02
Access and terrain: Review gates, pavement width, turns, slopes, rock outcrops, utilities and staging locations.
  • 03
Ownership and disposal: Confirm HOA rules, property lines, open space, park boundaries and the plan for logs or slash.

COLORADO HOME IGNITION ZONE

Defensible space starts beside the home.

Colorado State Forest Service guidance describes three treatment zones. Rock, slope, drainages and vegetation types affect how far mitigation may need to extend; exact prescriptions require site review.

ZONE 1 · 0–5 FEETImmediate

Reduce ember ignition

Keep roof edges, decks and foundation areas free of needles and combustible debris. Favor noncombustible materials directly adjacent to the structure.

ZONE 2 · 5–30 FEETIntermediate

Break brush connections

Separate shrubs and Gambel oak clumps, reduce ladder fuels and trim low limbs where appropriate. Avoid continuous grass-to-shrub-to-tree fuel paths.

ZONE 3 · 30–100 FEETExtended

Manage surrounding fuels

Consider selective thinning, unhealthy tree removal, brush reduction and driveway vegetation. Steep slopes and heavy fuels can change the treatment distance.

These are general homeowner reference zones, not a permit, fire-district inspection or guarantee of wildfire protection. Read Colorado State Forest Service guidance ↗

ROXBOROUGH PARK & DOUGLAS COUNTY RESOURCES

Local wildfire planning, association rules and funding.

Roxborough Park Foundation: Its Fire Mitigation Committee prepared a 2020 Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Before work on an association property, confirm current landscape approvals, common-area permissions and any contractor access instructions.

West Metro Fire Rescue: The 2021 Community Wildfire Protection Plan identifies Roxborough Park/Ravenna as a community hazard-planning zone. Use the published plan for context while confirming guidance for your exact parcel.

Douglas County cost-share: The county reports that its 2026 application period is closed. That round offered a 50% match for qualifying projects, up to $25,000 for individuals and $50,000 for community projects. Future eligibility and caps may change; county approval is not guaranteed.

THREE CHECKS BEFORE WORK BEGINS

Make the plan workable—and authorized.

01

Confirm the association

Check whether the parcel is in Roxborough Park Foundation, another HOA, or outside one; verify current tree and landscape rules.

02

Confirm all boundaries

Do not presume access to HOA open space, state-park land, neighbors’ parcels or public road rights-of-way.

03

Confirm cost-share timing

If pursuing future county funding, obtain the required bids and site map; do not start county-funded work before a signed award agreement.

ROXBOROUGH PARK HOMEOWNER QUESTIONS

Answers about wildfire mitigation and tree service in Roxborough.

Association permissions, oak brush, driveway access, community planning, Douglas County funding and project estimates.

Where should Roxborough Park homeowners begin wildfire mitigation?

Begin at the house: clear combustible debris from roofs, gutters, decks and the first five feet around the structure. Then evaluate connected oak brush, grasses, low branches, conifer spacing and driveway vegetation. The treatment needs to suit your parcel.

Does Roxborough Park have its own wildfire protection plan?

Yes. The Roxborough Park Foundation Fire Mitigation Committee prepared a Community Wildfire Protection Plan updated in 2020 with West Metro, Douglas County and Colorado State Forest Service involvement. It guides community-scale efforts, not an automatic prescription for every private lot.

Is Roxborough Park served by West Metro Fire Rescue?

West Metro Fire Rescue serves the Roxborough Park area and operates Station 15. Exact fire-protection coverage and applicable requirements should still be confirmed for the parcel, especially for nearby Roxborough Village or other communities.

Do I need Roxborough Park Foundation approval to remove trees or brush?

Check the current Roxborough Park Foundation rules before work if your property is within the association. Tree removal, exterior landscape changes, common-area access or work affecting shared property may have specific approval requirements. Do not assume private property rules extend into open space.

Can Stone Elk work near Roxborough State Park or protected open space?

Work is limited to areas where the customer has valid authority. State-park land, other public land, open space and neighbors’ parcels require separate permission. We check the intended boundary before proposing cutting, mulching or access routes.

Does the Douglas County cost-share program cover Roxborough Park?

Some qualifying owner or HOA projects in Douglas County’s wildland-urban interface may be eligible under future rounds. The 2026 application period is closed as of October 28, 2026. Program selection is competitive and requires county review, not a guarantee based only on location.

How much could a future Douglas County award cover?

In 2026, the county offered a 50% match up to $25,000 for individual projects and $50,000 for community projects, plus a separate cap for community chipping. Future program terms may differ. Refer to the county’s current instructions before relying on these amounts.

Can I start mitigation before receiving a county award?

For the county cost-share program, work performed before the signed award agreement is ineligible for funding. Collect required bids and a site map, await approval and an executed agreement, and follow all county directions before starting work intended for reimbursement.

Does every tree near the house need to be removed?

No. Wildfire mitigation is about interrupting fuel continuity and reducing exposure while keeping healthy vegetation when appropriate. Selective pruning, spacing, brush management and near-home noncombustible improvements often matter more than clearing everything.

Can forestry mulching be used on steep red-rock slopes?

Not automatically. Grade, exposed rock, erosion concerns, equipment access, utilities, nearby structures and soil conditions determine feasibility. We may propose selective hand work, chipping or hauling when machines are unsuitable.

Will a mitigation project reduce my insurance bill or guarantee Firewise credit?

No insurance premium, coverage decision, tax benefit, recognition, or government funding is guaranteed. We can provide a project scope and optional documentation, but insurers and programs decide what they accept.
